Not a toy version of one, an actual DAW that records audio, sequences MIDI, runs effects and exports something you can finish elsewhere.

The catch is that “mobile DAW” covers two very different things: apps built to catch an idea before it disappears, and apps built to finish a record. Picking the wrong one is the main reason people decide mobile music-making is not for them.

Start With What You Actually Want to Do

Catch ideas on the bus. You want something that opens fast and has instruments ready to play. Depth does not matter; getting the idea down before it goes does.

Record real instruments and vocals. Now you care about audio track counts, latency, and whether the app talks to an audio interface.

Finish tracks on a tablet. This is where the desktop-class apps earn their money, and where a big screen stops being optional.

Feed a desktop DAW. The most important question of the four. If the plan is always to finish on a computer, pick the mobile app that opens in the DAW you already own.

The Free Ones to Start With

GarageBand

Free, iPhone and iPad. If you have an Apple device it is a free download, so start here and do not buy anything until you have hit its limits. Multitrack audio and MIDI, a deep instrument library, Drummer, amp models, and projects that open straight into Logic Pro if you ever move up. For most people asking which mobile DAW to get, this is the honest answer.

BandLab

Free, iOS and Android. The strongest free option if you are not on Apple, and the best of the lot at collaboration: projects live in the cloud, so you can hand a session to someone else and keep working. Multitrack recording, a large loop and instrument library, mastering tools, and a browser version of the same project.

For Finishing Full Productions

Logic Pro für iPad

Subscription, iPad only. The most capable thing on this list. Apple rebuilt Logic for touch rather than shrinking it, and projects move between the iPad and the Mac version. The subscription is the thing to think about, because unlike a one-off purchase you are renting continued access rather than buying a version outright.

Lerne Musiktheorie nach Gehör

Building Blocks trainiert dein Gehör, damit du Akkorde, Melodien und Basslines hörst – so klingt alles, was du in deiner DAW machst, absichtlich. Steinberg’s mobile DAW, and the one to look at if you use Cubase, since it exports in a format Cubase opens. Audio and MIDI multitrack with time stretching, pitch shifting, automation, and a bundled set of instruments and effects. Check the current track limits and device requirements on the store page, since those move between versions.

FL Studio Mobile

Paid once, iOS and Android. A real version of FL rather than a companion app, with the step sequencer, piano roll and mixer you would expect. Worth the money mostly if you already work in FL Studio on the desktop, because the workflow transfers and so do the projects.

n-Track Studio

Free tier with a paid upgrade, iOS and Android. Leans towards recording rather than programming: guitar and bass amp models, a drum machine, tempo matching and pitch shifting. A good fit if you are tracking a real instrument into a phone rather than building a beat on it.

Audio Evolution Mobile Studio

Paid once, iOS and Android. A straightforward multitrack recorder and mixer with automation, loop support and a range of export formats. Less flashy than the others, and it matters most on Android, where the choice of serious multitrack recording apps is thinner than it is on iOS.

For Sketching Into a Desktop DAW

Ableton Note

Paid, iPhone and iPad. Deliberately not a full DAW. It is a sketchpad with Ableton’s drum kits and synths, built for getting an idea down in a couple of minutes, and the point of it is that the sketch opens in Ableton Live afterwards. If Live is where you finish, nothing else on this list joins up as cleanly.

For Recording Audio

MultiTrack DAW

Paid once, iPhone and iPad. A recorder rather than a studio: a high stereo track count, simultaneous multitrack recording, basic EQ and compression, and track freeze to keep older devices going. Nothing about it is fashionable, which is rather the point if what you want is a tape machine that fits in a pocket. Track limits vary by version and device, so check before buying.

What to Check Before You Buy

App lineups change faster than the things that make one good, so these are worth checking yourself rather than taking from any list, including this one.

Does it get your work out? Stems or a project file your desktop DAW can open. An app that only exports a stereo mixdown is a dead end for anything you intend to finish properly.

Does it see your interface? If you plan to record anything with a microphone, check that the app supports class-compliant audio interfaces on your specific device before you commit.

How is it sold? Paid once, free with an unlock, or a subscription. All three are fine, but a subscription means you keep paying to keep working, which matters more for a DAW holding years of projects than it does for most software. Check what access you retain if you stop.

Is it still being updated? Mobile music apps get abandoned quietly. Check the last update date in the store before you buy, because an app that has not been touched in two years will eventually stop launching after an OS update.

Try a free one first. GarageBand or BandLab costs nothing to find out whether the limitation you keep hitting is the app or the format itself.

Fazit

A phone is a genuinely good place to catch an idea and a workable place to finish one. Start with whichever free app came with your device, work out which of its limits you actually hit, and let that decide what you buy. Buying the most capable app first is the reliable way to end up with an expensive one you never learned.

Lerne Musiktheorie nach Gehör

Building Blocks trainiert dein Gehör, damit du Akkorde, Melodien und Basslines hörst – so klingt alles, was du in deiner DAW machst, absichtlich.
